Proposition 87: Key Facts

LESS DEPENDENCE ON OIL

We are dependent on oil, which causes environmental, economic and national security problems.  California has the nation’s worst air quality; the nation’s-highest gas prices; and we’re forced to import oil from unstable nations.  Proposition 87 reduces our dependence on oil with domestic energy sources like biofuels, wind and solar.

LESS DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL

We are dangerously dependent on foreign oil.  Half of California’s foreign oil comes from the Middle East.  Proposition 87 will break the oil companies’ stranglehold on our energy market and give us choices that are cleaner, cheaper and made right here at home.

CLEANER AIR, LESS ASTHMA

By reducing California’s dependence on gasoline and diesel, Prop 87 will reduce air pollution that causes asthma, lung disease and cancer.  California has the nation’s worst air quality.  By the age of two months, Los Angeles-area infants have already inhaled enough toxic pollutants to reach the EPA lifetime limit for cancer risk. Asthma causes 3.3 million school absences each year.  95% of Californians live in areas that fail to meet state and federal air quality standards.Ž

ENERGY CHOICES LIKE WIND AND SOLAR

Right now, the oil companies have a stranglehold on our energy market.  We have one choice: oil based fuels like gas and diesel.  Proposition 87 will bring Californians choices like biofuels, electric, wind and solar to reduce our oil dependence, our energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

JOBS FOR CALIFORNIA

UC Berkeley and Gov. Schwarzenegger’s economic advisers agree Prop 87 will create new businesses and tens-of-thousands of good paying jobs.  Prop. 87 also creates a $100 million workforce training program through California’s community colleges.

FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Prop 87’s $4 billion investment in the California economy will generate additional revenues for schools and local governments. Prop 87 provides funding to help schools and cities buy cleaner, cheaper running buses and other fleet vehicles.

Proposition 87 means less dependence on foreign oil and cleaner air. But the opposition is lining up, contributing millions of dollars to spin, scare and deceive voters.
